McGregor Mocks Leon Edwards’ Fighting Style – ‘Edwards Loves A Decision’
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Conor McGregor has hit out at UFC Welterweight Champion Leon Edwards’ fights.

McGregor makes his return to the UFC against Michael Chandler on June 29 at UFC 303. It is his first fight since breaking his leg against Dustin Poirier in 2021 at UFC 264. The event has already broken a UFC record, with over $20 million live gate. With over a month before the fight, there is huge anticipation to see how McGregor will perform.

During McGregor’s time out of the Octagon, Edwards has been making his legacy. He defeated Kamaru Usman to secure the belt at UFC 278 in 2022 via a five-round KO. He defended the belts with another win over Usman, followed by a victory against Colby Covington at UFC 296. The rematch with Usman and the Convington wins were by decision. Out of his 17 UFC fights, Edwards has won 10 by decision, leaving McGregor unhappy with his fighting style.

McGregor On Edwards

“There’s too many decisions going on now with that Leon [Edwards] fella. Leon Edwards loves a decision. And then he’s fighting another…decision guy, your man Belal [Muhammad], so not great times in the welterweight title picture…Leon Edwards, Nate Diaz almost knocked him out, had him out on his feet…also, [Donald] Cerrone went the distance with him. I’m looking at all these belts: the lightweight world title, although I’ve held that, how excited would I be to cut that weight again after winning it already? I’d be excited about the [BMF] title and the welterweight title,” McGregor said

Edwards has reacted to those comments, saying he is willing to fight McGregor. The champion must first defends his welterweight belt against Belal Muhammad at UFC 304 on July 27. It is a rematch of their 2021 clash, which became a no-contest after Edwards accidentally poked Muhammad in the eye. Muhammad could no longer continue as the fight came to an end.

Edwards On McGregor

If McGregor gets past Chandler, Edwards was open to that fight. It would be a major sell-out, putting England’s best against one of the most iconic Irish fighters. The card could easily sell out in the UK or the US. If it did happen, Edwards saw it topping the bill at Madison Square Garden. Given McGregor’s record gate for the Chandler fight, there are plenty of reasons to make that fight.

“Conor’s got to take out Michael [Chandler], I’ll take out [Belal Muhammad], and we’ll go from there. That would be good. 100 percent, why not? Let’s give him the opportunity to become a three-division world champion, give me the opportunity to take out a guy like Conor McGregor. New York? That would be perfect…That’s the fight…MSG? Let’s go. We have business to take of…but that needs to happen, and it should happen,” Edwards stated

Before Edwards can consider that fight, they both must get past their next fight. Chandler has been patiently waiting since 2023 for the McGregor fight. Meanwhile, Muhammad will finally get his title shot.
