Angels’ Anthony Rendon breaks silence on latest injury concern

Anthony Rendon was once regarded as one of the better players in MLB. His time with the Los Angeles Angels has been disappointing due to not only underperformance, but constant injury concerns. Rendon is currently dealing with a hamstring injury and he addressed the issue on Monday, via MLB.com.

“It feels good, it’s just been coming along slowly,” Rendon said of the injury. “We’ve been doing rehab but that’s the extent of it, unfortunately. Just trying to keep the hamstring elongated.”

The third baseman’s injury timeline remains uncertain for now. Rendon is frustrated with his injury trouble. He wants to be on the field, but luck has not been on his side since heading to Anaheim.

In fact, his only full season with the Angels came in 2020, when he played 58 games during the shortened 60-game campaign. Since then, the most games Rendon has appeared in is 47 games. And every season since then has been 162 games, so Rendon has not been able to contribute to the ball club all that much.

He’s also seemingly appeared disinterested at times. Rendon has made alarming comments over the past few years that have led many to wonder if he even enjoys playing baseball. Rendon is certainly not a fan-favorite in Anaheim at the moment.

Angels’ challenging 2024 season

The Angels hired the well-respected Ron Washington to manage the team in 2024. They were hopeful that he could help turn things around. With Anthony Rendon and Mike Trout among the Angels players currently injured, however, the Halos hold just a 19-29 record as of this story’s writing.

The Angels are currently just a half-game in front of the Oakland Athletics for last place in the American League West. Meanwhile, they are already seven games behind the first place Seattle Mariners.

Disappointment and frustration have told the story of Angels baseball over the past decade. Sure, they have had some positive moments. Having Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout on the same team kept fans coming to games. But Ohtani signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers this past offseason and Trout is injured once again.

The Angels have not reached the playoffs since 2014. That is likely not going to change in 2024 barring a major bounce-back effort moving forward.

Anthony Rendon’s contract

Anthony Rendon’s contract is not helping matters. The Angels signed Rendon to a seven-year, $245 million contract after he led the Washington Nationals to a World Series victory in 2019. Rendon has yet to play in more than 60 games in a season for the Halos.

Unless Rendon returns and not only stays healthy but performs at an All-Star level, his contract will be remembered as a failure by Angels fans. It is worth noting that he is still under contract through the 2026 campaign. The Angels owe him over $38 million in each season of his deal moving forward.

Rendon’s deal is not the only reason why the Angels are struggling. It is not helping matters right now, however. Paying a player almost $40 million per season to play less than half of the campaign is far from ideal.

Rendon, despite what some people believe, surely wants to play. He is likely doing everything he can to return as soon as possible. Still, Angels fans are frustrated.
