The Wisconsin football program lost the battle for a top cornerback target in the 2025 recruiting class.

Zadian Gentry took to social media on Sunday to announce his commitment to SMU.

According to the composite rankings, Gentry is the No. 519 player in the country, the No. 46 CB, and the No. 87 player in Texas.

Gentry picked SMU over Wisconsin football, Missouri, Oklahoma State, and Baylor, who all landed in his top five in April.

The Texas native recorded 41 tackles, four pass breakups, and two interceptions in his junior season at McKinney High School.

Badgers cornerbacks coach Paul Haynes served as the primary recruiter for Gentry. Haynes stopped by his school to visit the three-star corner just over a week ago. Gentry also had an official visit locked in with Wisconsin football for the first weekend in June, plus visits planned with Baylor and Nebraska in the weeks following.

UW currently holds a commitment from CB Jai’mier Scott in the 2025 cycle. Gentry was considered one of the top targets at the position to pair with Scott, but Wisconsin will now pivot to other targets, including Rukeem Stroud, Mason Alexander, and Corey Costner, who all have official visits scheduled, and in-state cornerback Tre Poteat.

Wisconsin football is expected to take multiple bodies at cornerback once again in the 2025 cycle after signing six defensive backs in the last two recruiting cycles. As it stands, the Badgers hold 11 commitments, good for the No. 17 recruiting class in the country per the composite rankings.
